Apple To Announce iAd Mobile Advertising Platform To Combat Google

April 7, 2010 Posted by adnanahmed under Apple

apple-quattroThe upcoming sneak peek of iPhone OS 4.0 won’t only announce iPhone OS 4.0, but will also include Apple’s word on iAd mobile advertising platform, based on the acquisition of Quattro Wireless in January.

Apple’s this move will place it in direct competition with Google, whose AdMob acquisition is still pending from regulatory approval. Other than that, the threat that Apple had after losing Admob will also fade away.  Apple isn’t an advertising guru like Google having million of advertisers onboard; it may stand a chance in a duel to the death with the Google juggernaut!

Wikipedia Users can Enjoy with Articles iPhone App

Wikipedia users wished to read Wikipedia on iphone, and now it is possible. Now you can read article and other stuff via your iPhone.

There are some innovative features in this app, like you can view articles based on locations, a very good photo viewer (you can either copy photos or save them to your camera roll), and a multi-page interface that works the same way as Mobile Safari.

The app also features a pull-down menu, a la Tweetie 2, that can easily set the orientation of the device and perfect for those that want to view Wikipedia articles while in bed or on their side.

You can search both article titles and content, bookmark your favorite articles in folders of your choice, and even view an article at random by shaking the device.

Additional features available in app are; text is clear and highly readable, easy scrolling between sections and clicking on an info box quickly enlarges that section.

Those deficits pale, though, when compared to the overall presentation of the app. One of my favorite features is that you can tap and hold on an intra-wiki link and open up the link in a new page — just like in Safari. I also like how text can be magnified or made smaller by using pinch zoom.

If you’re looking for a way to access Wikipedia and you want the best looking experience possible, give Articles a shot. It has been localized in Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish — so it’s a good option for multi-lingual iPhone users too.

Years: An Amazing iPhone App

Years is an amazing iPhone app that gives a nicely laid-out full year calendar, making it easy to plan for vacations or mark important dates.

This app shows four months on screen but it can be scrolled to later in the year with the swipe of finger. The top buttons let you see the previous year or you can plan for the coming year.

As you’ll touch a month on the screen, it will give you full screen view. By accessing the tapping buttons at the bottom, you can get four different ways to mark your calendar. This app facilitates you in circling dates, cross them out use a little scribble graphic, or add a star. There is no text input. You can email the email the month or year after marking your important dates to remind someone of important dates or you can copy the year for personal use.

This app is very useful, even though there’s not much to it. You can set out most of the important dates by setting up your own system for the marks on calendar.

With that said, it would be very helpful to have things like text input for more detailed scheduling, day views for mapping out your busy day, and push alerts so you don’t miss anything important.

Certainly the possibilities are endless, and there are many calendar apps out there that have those things, but maybe this is exactly the way the developers wanted this calendar app to be–a quick view of important dates with an elegant interface. Either way, Years will be useful to just about anyone, even without more advanced features.

eBay subsidiary PayPal has established an iPhone app of its own, this updated version offers new, and more secure, features for sending and receiving payments.

The PayPal Send Money App provides iPhone users with a new amazing feature, which allows the money transfer between two users by physically bumping the two gadgets together.

Another amazing feature of the app is that “split check” feature provides quick calculations of the split cost of a meal, up to 20 people. Collect Money allows users to request funds from multiple people, while the more traditional method of paying users is included as well.

Users can also set up reminders for donate money to eligible receivers, recurring payments and manage all the technical details of a PayPal account.

The app is just one of the latest examples of the growth of mobile payments, and like the original PayPal app, this updated version is free.

NextBuses App Tells When the Next Bus is Coming on Stop

An amazing iphone app specifically designed for UK residents that informs when the next bus would arrive on the stop. This app helps you get notified of the next coming bus on the stop especially for the stops where there is no display for the buses time.

Using information from Traveline’s NextBuses service, which already exists in SMS and WAP-based form, it mixes scheduled and real-time (where available) information based on the user’s location.

NextBuses covers 370,000 bus stops throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Though if reviews on iTunes are to be believed, the coverage could be a little patchy outside the main cities. One iTunes reviewer complains: “The app by itself is good… if there were any information it could give you. I haven’t found one bus stop yet that has any departure info.”

And at $ 0.99 it sounds worth it if you’re a regular bus user..

Google’s Move to Smartphones, Right or Wrong

Google has delivered its own mobile operating system Android to several phone mobile phone manufacturers. But Tech Crunch founder Michael Arrington says that Google isn’t stopping here. The blogger claimed confidently that Google is manufacturing its own hardware for its smartphones.

“Everything up until now has just been a warm up to the Google phone,” Arrington wrote in his blog post.

Arrington claims he has “absolutely confirmed” that Google is building a Google-branded phone to be sold through retailers sometime early 2010.

Really? But we heard two weeks ago that the head of Google’s Android development, Andy Rubin made it crystal clear that “Google is not making a phone.

“We’re not making hardware,” Rubin told CNET. “We’re enabling other people to build hardware.”

So who’s telling the truth? TheStreet’s Scott Moritz, who has a notorious record of rumors and the his rumors mostly becomes reality. (For example, in May, Moritz wrote a story which quoted an analyst who predicted AT&T would reduce prices for the iPhone’s monthly service plan. Not only did that not turn out to be true; it wasn’t a rumor at all.)

John Gruber from “Daring Fireball” says that if Google pulled off such a stunt, the search giant would likely infuriate telecom partners who have agreed to put Android on their smartphones. We agree with the assessment that a Google-branded phone would probably be an unwise move for Google.

What do you think about Google’s move to smartphones?
